Savonburg, KS – population 108 – is a small town in the Southeast corner of Allen County. It was founded in 1879 and incorporated January 13, 1902. At one time, the population reached 300, and the town had as many as 25 to 30 businesses. It was a large shipping point for livestock, grain, and broomcorn.
The closing of the High School in 1946 and the grade school in the 1960's was a factor in the decline of the town. The town now has a community center and a nice library which is used by people from Elsmore, Stark, and surrounding area. |
